Albert Vila premieres his new quartet at Jamboree Sala 1 on Friday 30 October, in two sets, at 7pm and 8.30pm. The line-up is Perico Sambeat on alto saxophone, Vila on guitar, Abel Boquera on organ and Umberto Odone on drums. General admission is €26 and members pay €22. Mas i Mas promotes it.
The band starts from the classic jazz organ trio and adds the saxophone. The book is “entirely original”, the venue says, and it goes after the more rhythmic side of the genre, with soul and blues worked in. Of Boquera and Odone, the listing says they are “key figures and among the most in-demand on the current Madrid scene”.
Vila has recorded in that room before: in September 2017 he cut “Jamboree Live 4” there, with “Major Issues”, “The Bean”, “Gym-Jam”, “Therefore” and “Blue”.
It is not the only Catalan date of the run. The following night, Saturday 31, the quartet plays the Sunset Jazz Club in Girona, and on Saturday 7 November it plays Lleida; Madrid comes in between, on the 6th. In 2027 the band tours Belgium, picked by Les Lundis d’Hortense, with saxophonist Steven Delannoye and organist Maxime Moyaerts in place of Sambeat and Boquera.
Vila’s last record is “Reality Is Nuance”, which Fresh Sound New Talent released in November 2023, a trio date with Doug Weiss on bass and Rudy Royston on drums. That same year he had put out “Levity”, a solo guitar record taped in 2021, through Belgium’s Hypnote Records and Japan’s Mocloud. There is no released recording by this quartet.
