Dream Theater have gone into the studio to record their seventeenth album. On 13 October they posted a photograph of all five members at Ytse Jam Studios, captioned “#DT17 is underway”. No title, no date and no other detail have been announced.

It will be the second record since Mike Portnoy returned to the drum stool in October 2023, thirteen years after leaving the band. The previous one, “Parasomnia”, came out on 7 February 2025: eight songs and seventy-one minutes, recorded at DTHQ on Long Island.

The timing matches what James LaBrie had laid out. They had touring booked through to mid-May this year and, he said, “probably late ’26 or early ’27 we’ll get in to start writing and recording a new album. And then hopefully late ’27 or early ’28 we’ll go back out.”

The line-up is the same as on “Parasomnia”: LaBrie on vocals, John Petrucci on guitar, John Myung on bass, Jordan Rudess on keyboards and Portnoy on drums.
