Dropkick Murphys, often abbreviated as DKM, are an American punk band formed in 1996 in the working-class Irish immigrant neighbourhoods of Boston. They rehearsed in the basement of a friend’s barbershop, blending styles like punk rock, Oi!, Irish folk, rock and hardcore into a sound all their own. Their musical touchstones include bands like Stiff Little Fingers, The Pogues, The Clash, AC/DC and Swingin’ Utters.

Their name, which literally means “early drop kick”, is a matter of some dispute. The most widely accepted story is that it was taken from a rehabilitation centre, a kind of shelter housing alcoholics, with Murphy being the person tasked with collecting them from the streets. That’s the account given by Marc Orrell, one of the band’s members. The group has carved out a place for itself on the music scene and gained diehard fans. Famous among them are their Saint Patrick’s Day weekends held in their hometown, Boston.
