Emma Ruth Rundle released “These Killing Times” today, her sixth studio album, on Errant Child, the label she runs herself. It’s eight tracks: “Powerless”, “God’s Picture”, “Anvil”, “Catherine Wheel”, “Don’t Delay Heaven”, “Enough”, “Human Kindness” and “Oceans of Time”.
The album is played by a full band — Jess Gowrie, Chelsea Wolfe’s drummer; saxophonist Patrick Shiroishi; guitarists Nick Reinhart, of Tera Melos, and Gina Gleason, of Baroness; and Troy Zeigler — and she produced it with Sonny Diperri, who has worked with My Bloody Valentine and Trent Reznor.
“It’s like a prayer to never give up and never stop trying,” Rundle says of “Powerless”. “I like the idea of the hammer as something that can both destroy and create.” Of “Anvil” she says it’s “a song for the bitches, the witches and the queers, because I find I can fall into all three categories a little.”
Of “Human Kindness” she says: “It’s about love and hate and the existential dilemma. It’s about violence and tenderness.”
In October she tours the United States solo, opening for All Them Witches, then headlines with the full band in November and December.
