Emmie Reek brings “Jazz, Queen!” to Harlem Jazz Club on Saturday 28 November. The bar opens at quarter to eight, the show starts at eight and tickets are €13. The night is part of the Ciutat Vella Jazz and Creative Music Festival, which this year spreads its programme across October, November and December.
She plays with a trio: Reek on guitar and vocals, Cecilia Collaço on drums and Cesar Vasconcelos on bass. The guest voice on this first night is Àlex Marteen, whom the venue places somewhere between pop opera and rock. The set is well-known songs rewritten through soul and R&B, and the venue doesn’t name any of them in advance.
Reek is a singer, songwriter and drag queen, born in Brazil and based in Barcelona, and “Jazz, Queen!” is the series she is starting: its own theme, a live band and a guest voice each time, always from the queer perspective the venue puts front and centre.
Harlem Jazz Club bills itself as the oldest music venue in Barcelona. A ticket doesn’t reserve a place: the venue warns that chairs and tables go on a first-come basis.
