Horacio Fumero opens the series of encounters that carries his name at Club del Disco, on Carrer de Casp, on Wednesday 14 October at 20:30. The first guest is Paquito D’Rivera. Doors are at 20:00 and tickets are €25 plus a €0.60 booking fee. The Project is running it as part of the Festival Jazz Barcelona.
The format is not a concert but a mix of conversation and live music, modelled on the “Piano Jazz” programme Marian McPartland made for American public radio from 1978 to 2011. The festival’s listing points out that D’Rivera was one of the musicians who went on it.
Fumero is a double bassist, born in 1949 in Cañada Rosquín, in the Argentine province of Santa Fe, and has lived in Barcelona since 1980. From 1981 until Tete Montoliu’s death in 1997 he was the standing bassist in Montoliu’s trio, and with that group and on his own he played with Freddie Hubbard, Johnny Griffin, Woody Shaw and Benny Golson. He teaches at ESMUC and at the Conservatori del Liceu.
D’Rivera plays alto saxophone and clarinet, is Cuban and was one of the founders of Irakere.
Club del Disco opened to the public in late September, across three hundred square metres at number 62 of Carrer de Casp: a record shop, a bar with a hi-fi rig and a concert room with seventy-four seats and room for a hundred and forty-eight standing. The programme for the rest of the year also takes in listening sessions, jam sessions, solo piano and a tango series.
The festival has a second listing for this same encounter, with the same text and the same guest, for Saturday 14 November. Tickets for that one are not on sale yet.
