French-Lebanese trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf performs at Sala Apolo on Wednesday 28 October, at 20:30 with doors at 19:30, as part of the 58th Barcelona Jazz Festival.
The show he’s bringing is called “The Trumpets of Michel-Ange Vol. 2”, which is also the name of the trumpet brand he created himself. His live shows move away from jazz-club logic: large ensembles, rock-concert staging, and a relationship with the audience that openly seeks collective euphoria over reverential listening.
He plays a quarter-tone trumpet, with a fourth valve, developed by his father, Nassim Maalouf, so he could play the maqams of Arabic music on a Western instrument. This lets him slide between notes a conventional trumpeter can’t reach, giving his melodies a sound that’s both familiar and slightly off-kilter to an ear used to equal temperament. On that foundation he’s built a career spanning film scores, pop collaborations and large-scale jazz albums.
