Dion Hoorn and Casey-Joan Whyte co-lead the quartet playing Sala 1 at the Jamboree on Tuesday 27 October, in two sets, at seven and half past eight in the evening. Hoorn brings the alto saxophone and Whyte the violin, with Masa Kamaguchi on double bass and Stephen Keogh on drums behind them. General admission is €24 and members pay €21, and MasiMas Live is promoting it.
The show sits inside the season the venue is devoting to John Coltrane and Miles Davis, both born in 1926: Davis on 26 May and Coltrane on 23 September.
The venue introduces them as “two young musicians of surprising talent”. Whyte also works as a classical violin soloist: it credits her with Saint-Saëns’s Violin Concerto No. 3 and the Mendelssohn, both played with orchestra. Of Hoorn it picks out the precision of his lines on alto, and adds that he plays bass too.
Both of them write, and the venue says some of what they play that night will be their own music, with “the music and the spirit” of Coltrane at the centre of it. The setlist has not been announced.
Keogh comes back later in the same season: on 11 November he plays Room 3 with the Bruce Barth Trio and tenor saxophonist Piero Odorici, in a programme built around the Coltrane of 1961 to 1965.
