Mike Patton with Mariachi Gama 1000 on stage at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City

Mike Patton took Mondo Cane to Mexico for the first time on 1 October, in the main hall of the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City, with a symphony orchestra, a choir and an electric band. Mondo Cane is Patton’s Italian-language project: a repertoire of Italian popular song sung in the original, Ennio Morricone included.

Mariachi Gama 1000 came out for the encore, joining halfway through Mr. Bungle’s “Retrovertigo” and staying on for “La Llorona”, for Álvaro Carrillo’s “Luz de Luna” and for Juan Gabriel’s “Hasta Que Te Conocí”. The mariachi had backed Juan Gabriel for years, and Juan Gabriel had played his run of concerts at Bellas Artes in 1990.

Today, 3 October, Mondo Cane plays at seven in the evening on the esplanade of the Alhóndiga de Granaditas in Guanajuato and opens the fifty-fourth Festival Internacional Cervantino, which runs until the 18th.
