Greenleaf Music announced on 5 October that the New Sanctuary Trio CD can at last be bought without being a subscriber to the label, in limited quantities. The music dates from 2016 and until now only the people paying for the subscription series had heard it.
The trio is Dave Douglas on trumpet, Marc Ribot on electric guitar and Susie Ibarra on drums and percussion. There are twelve Douglas compositions, all short, and each came out in the month it is named after: the titles are the months in Italian, from “Gennaio” to “Dicembre”, and they run from two and a half minutes to six and three-quarters.
Each piece starts from a single stave of music. From there the three improvise: it gives them “a framework to explore, develop, and reinvent the material through their own musical vocabularies”, the label says.
The record is the fifth volume of Greenleaf’s Paperback Series. The trio took this material around Europe in the winter of 2016 to 2017.
