Pure Reason Revolution release “Terrifying Angels”, their seventh album, tomorrow through InsideOutMusic. There are seven tracks: the title song runs to 12 minutes 26 seconds and “Hold Your Wrath”, which closes the record, to 14 minutes 45.
The title came out of an Easter sermon Jon Courtney heard at a church in Berlin. “My initial thought of an angel was the cute kind of cherub, but traditionally angels are not comforting figures. They are often overwhelming, terrifying beings,” he says. On the sound: “The last record was more chill, so it just felt terribly natural to do something grittier, heavier and more aggressive.”
Courtney produced and recorded it himself, and plays vocals, guitar, bass, keyboards, percussion and programming on it. Annike Shireen sings and Ravi Kesavaram is on drums. Bruce Soord, of The Pineapple Thief, handled the mix and John Webber the master.
Greg Jong, a founding member of the band, is back: he plays on the title track and co-wrote “Rumination Ruin”. Paul Mullen, of Yourcodenameis:milo, also turns up, along with Kenneth Fitzgerald on piano and two guest bassists: Mariusz Duda, of Lunatic Soul, and Kristoffer Gildenlöw. The other five tracks are “Spin Like Fire”, “Black-Arrow Acrobats”, “Haywire Heart”, “Rumination Ruin” and “Below Radiance”.
The band tour the UK in November. No Spanish date has been announced.
