The Messthetics and saxophonist James Brandon Lewis play Marula Café on Friday 6 November. Doors at ten in the evening, show at half past, advance tickets 28 €, 31 € after, with Cap Cap Produccions.
The Messthetics is guitarist Anthony Pirog with Fugazi’s rhythm section, who started playing together again years after the Washington band. What comes out of it is instrumental and doesn’t resemble the hardcore they come from: long tracks, time-signature changes and plenty of guitar.
Lewis joined them in 2022 for a single, “Fear Not”, which led to two joint albums: the self-titled one from 2024 and “Deface the Currency”, released this past February. He comes from the New York jazz scene and records for Impulse!; in the band he supplies the vocal-like line the guitar doesn’t play.
The Marula is a small venue on Carrer dels Escudellers and the show starts late, which is how that venue programmes.
