American singer Samara Joy performs at the Palau de la Música Catalana on Friday 13 November, at 21:00 with doors open from 20:30. She takes the stage fronting a septet, as part of the 58th Barcelona Jazz Festival’s programme.
She arrives with “Portrait” as her latest work, continuing in the vein of “Linger Awhile”: standards handled without museum-piece reverence, roomy arrangements and a contralto voice that never needs to rush to impress.
Joy comes from a gospel family in the Bronx and won the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition in 2019, while still a student. In 2023 she took home two Grammys the same night: Best New Artist, a general category rather than a genre one, and Best Jazz Vocal Album for “Linger Awhile”. The first of the two has often been described as exceptional for jazz, although Esperanza Spalding had already won it in 2011, twelve years earlier.
