Joshua Redman Group

The “Joshua Redman Group” is an ensemble led by saxophonist Joshua Redman, a leading figure in contemporary jazz. The group has gone through several line-ups over the years, but the music they play is defined by its focus on modern jazz and improvisation.

Joshua Redman is widely recognised on the jazz scene for his virtuosity on saxophone and his ability to blend elements of different musical styles in his work. Throughout his career he has collaborated with many other leading musicians and has been praised for his creativity and versatility.

After last year’s celebrated reunion with former bandmates Brad Mehldau, Christian McBride and Brian Blade, Joshua Redman returns to the Barcelona Jazz Festival to present his new project, Where Are We, an album due out in September 2023 on which the saxophonist collaborates for the first time with a vocalist, Californian singer Gabrielle Cavassa. “The concept behind Where Are We is very simple,” Redman has explained. “Each song on the album is about, or references, a specific geographic place in the United States. For example, Streets of Philadelphia (Bruce Springsteen), Going to Chicago (Count Basie), Manhattan (Rodgers & Hart) and Alabama (John Coltrane).” So, Redman continues, in a sense this is an album “about” the United States, at once a celebration and a critique. Another step in a career that, year after year, places Redman back at the centre of contemporary jazz made to last.
