Max Sunyer plays PUY&CO, the art space on Carrer de Sant Pere Màrtir in Gràcia, on Thursday 8 October as part of Cicle Connexions. The show starts at eight in the evening, tickets cost €15.36 — €7.68 with the 50% student discount, fees included — and include a drink and snack. Capacity is twenty, and half the seats are already booked. He plays with pianist Jaume Vilaseca, who hosts every guest on the series.
Cicle Connexions runs twice a month, on Thursdays, each session pairing a different guest with Vilaseca: electronic jazz where improvisation sits alongside programmed backing, built for a twenty-seat room. Beyond its music programme, PUY&CO also hosts permanent and temporary exhibitions.
Sunyer was born in 1947. Born Joaquim Sunyer in La Pobla de Massaluca, in the Terra Alta, he picked up the electric guitar at fourteen, already in Barcelona, and between 1968 and 1972 studied classical guitar under Gracià Tarragó without leaving jazz behind. In 1974 he joined Iceberg, the quartet that introduced Catalan jazz-rock to a wider audience. Since 1979 he’s played mostly as a trio with Carles Benavent on bass and Salvador Niebla on drums, and in 1985 he won the Gran Premi del Disc, awarded by the Catalan government.
