The album opens at 7:45 (“The Third Revelation”) and closes at 7:39 (“Agni Kai”), and somewhere in between there’s a track that lasts 1:52. For a band that has until now worked in short bursts, those are two new extremes on No One Is Coming To Save Us: Burner have stopped going straight at it.
The sound hasn’t moved. The guitar keeps the chainsaw edge of the HM-2 pedal, gritty enough to bite and defined enough not to turn to mush, and the riffs still roll with the groove that got the band noticed. What’s new are the slow, sparse passages, which work as counterweight and let you breathe between two assaults.
Three tracks carry guests. “What Will You Give?” (3:05) brings in Josh Middleton and his Sylosis; “Sunrise, Parabellum” (2:45) has Matthew K. Heafy; and “Kurtz” (3:41) has Cult Leader with Anthony Lucero. They’re three of the four shortest tracks of the eleven and all three fall in the first half.
Burner are from south London, formed in 2021, and this is their second full-length after It All Returns to Nothing (2023). Church Road Records puts it out, as it has from the start. The usual blend (metallic hardcore, thrash, mathcore, metalcore and a streak of black metal) is all still there, only now it’s in service of something else.
The production is cohesive and it sits above the average for this corner of music, but on a record that has bet specifically on space and contrast, merely correct isn’t enough: when “Accelerationist” goes past in 1:52 and “The Agony of Peace” (5:17) opens up right after, the difference in depth between the two ought to be far more audible than it is. And forty-seven and a half minutes is a long time for this kind of music.
