Tomatito Sexteto

Tomatito, whose real name is José Fernández Torres, is a renowned Spanish flamenco guitarist. He was born on 20 August 1958 in Almería, Andalusia. He is widely regarded as one of the great virtuosos of flamenco guitar and has left an indelible mark on contemporary flamenco music.

Tomatito comes from a family with deep roots in flamenco, which exposed him to the music from a young age. His father, Tomate, was a flamenco guitarist, and his great-uncle, Miguel Fernández Cortés, known as El Tomate, was a celebrated flamenco singer.

Throughout his career, Tomatito has collaborated with some of flamenco’s most prominent artists, including Camarón de la Isla and Paco de Lucía. His guitar playing is defined by its virtuosity and his ability to fuse tradition and modernity in his music. He has been instrumental in the evolution of contemporary flamenco, bringing in influences from jazz and other musical genres.

Tomatito has released several solo albums that have been acclaimed by both critics and audiences. His music is known for its passion, emotion and exceptional technique in flamenco guitar playing. He has received numerous awards throughout his career, including several Grammys and the National Prize for Flamenco Guitar Art.

The guitarist from Almería now returns to one of his favourite venues with his sextet — featuring dancer Karime Amaya — and a very special guest: singer Miguel Poveda, from Badalona. “We’ll do whatever he wants and whatever I want,” Tomatito told us with a smile, “because flamenco isn’t a competition, it’s collaboration, art and friendship.”
