From the band’s inception through to 2000, Enrique Mompó and Francisco Javier Nula began writing the album El último caballero. Once it was finished, they started looking for the right musicians to record the songs. The first to join the group was Fernando Asensi (drums and production), who soon became a permanent member. In 2001, bassist Alejandro Penella and vocalist Pablo Solano (currently with Dragonfly), an acquaintance of Fernando Asensi, joined the line-up.
With this line-up, Opera Magna recorded the demo Opera Prima with three songs: Horitzonts de glòria, Terres de turment and La sang de l’enemic, which were later included on their debut full-length. In late 2004, José Vicente Broseta replaced Pablo on vocals, and with him in the band they recorded El último caballero (2006). After recording the album, Fernando Asensi stepped away from drums to focus solely on production work at Fireworks Estudios, and was replaced by Adrián Romero. Finally, Rubén Casas joined Opera Magna on keyboards, rounding out the line-up the band still has today.

As a preview of their second album, Poe, Opera Magna released, on 26 June 2009, the taster «Un sueño en un Sueño», which included the songs «Un sueño en un Sueño», «Entierro Prematuro», a cover of Avalanch’s «Torquemada», among others.
On 31 March 2010, their second studio album, Poe, was released. The record’s theme revolves around the stories of the American writer. Every song, except the last, represents one of them. The album features guest vocals from voice actor Luis Posada (known as one of Spain’s most prestigious dubbing voices, having dubbed actors like Jim Carrey, Johnny Depp and Leonardo DiCaprio) narrating the intro, theatre and musicals actress Julia Möller on the song El retrat Oval, and Pedro Saz (In Mute) providing the growled vocals featured on El demonio de la perversidad.
In 2014 the band announced the release of Del amor y otros demonios, confirming it would be a concept work split into three acts, each its own album: Del amor y otros demonios — Act 1 (2014), Del amor y otros demonios — Act 2 (2015) and Del amor y otros demonios — Act 3 (2019).
