Joe Satriani and Steve Vai release «The Sea of Emotion» on 6 November, the first record they’ve made together. It’s out via earMUSIC under the name SATCHVAI, and they’ve previewed it with a first single, «Mayhem».
It’s ten tracks, including «Bronco Freight Train», «Dancing» and the three-part suite that gives the album its title. Guest musicians include drummers Kenny Aronoff and Mike Mangini and bassist Billy Sheehan.
Both of them have said that once they got into it, they discovered they write music in completely different ways.
Their relationship dates back to 1973, when a thirteen-year-old Steve Vai started taking guitar lessons from a seventeen-year-old Joe Satriani on Long Island; the record includes a recorded fragment from one of those lessons. Since then, they’ve mostly crossed paths on the «G3» tour, which Satriani devised in 1996 and which brings together rotating line-ups of guest guitarists.
